Whiskey Cocktail Hour, Thanksgiving edition: Turkey Day Sour

This month we celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s strange this year since many of us will not be able to reunite with our families. That’s not to say we can’t yet drink as if we’re trying to escape our mothers’ disappointment that we’re not yet married, or our father’s judgment on our career choices, or our own sadness. about the year that has passed. while we were stuck inside on Zoom calls.

But back to the good stuff, the whiskey cocktails! I’m a huge fan of taking things that you would normally have around the house and using them in your cocktails. Jams and jellies are always high on my to-do list because the job has already been done for you, in that they’re basically really condensed syrups. They are full of flavor and sweetness and are the perfect “sweet” element for a cocktail.

As such, this gelatinous stuff that comes in a box that everyone loves to hate, is sort of the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving cocktails. Of course, I’m talking about cranberry sauce. Whether you like the traditional kind or the “fancy” stuff that features real whole cranberries, they’re both a great addition to a drink. For this recipe, I used the standard type that comes out of the box in the same shape it went into the box, mainly because I don’t like chunks of fruit in my cocktails, but that’s right. personal preference.

I wanted to take some of the classic flavors we think of when we think of Thanksgiving and add them to a drink. For this cocktail, I wanted a whiskey with a bit of spice without using rye. Wild Turkey 101 is one of my personal favorites, I always have a bottle on my shelf at home and it works great in cocktails when you don’t want something sweet and sweet like a lot of bourbons. This whiskey has a backbone, and that’s what I wanted for this drink.

It’s a pretty traditional sour whiskey, and it leans towards the dry side, which I love because so many Thanksgiving foods tend to be rich and heavy, and this cocktail isn’t sweet or heavy at all. . If egg whites bother you, you can just omit them, but I love the texture they offer, and when you add your bitters in, egg whites are the perfect platform for herbs.

Turkey Day Sour

  • 2 oz Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon
  • 1 ounce of lemon juice
  • 1 ounce of cranberry sauce
  • 1 egg white
  • 2-4 small sage leaves
  • Aromatic Bitter & Sage Leaves for garnish

Add all the ingredients except the bitters to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Filter in your small shaker and pour in the ice. Shake again without ice cubes (for maximum foam) and strain into your cocktail glass. Add a few drops of bitters and a few sage leaves in a nice pattern. Enjoy!
