TIn the back room of Morris’ Fireside Restaurant in Cannon Beach is the new MacGregor’s Whiskey Bar, which first rose to fame at its Manzanita operation, just three blocks from the beach.
While some businesses are struggling to grow, the expansion doesn’t appear to have hurt the quality of service or the plentiful supply of dark liquors on display in the most recent MacGregor’s.
With an enviable top shelf that must represent at least 400 years of accumulated barrel age – including a rare Pappy Van Winkle that goes for a modest $ 139 – a trip to MacGregor can really squeeze the greenbacks out of the wallet if you don’t. are not careful.
It may be best to stick with the reasonably priced cocktail list or experiment with a range of flights if it’s not a very special occasion. (I’m calling it “special” here because every time you walk into MacGregor’s it feels like a special occasion.)
There are many inventive versions of the classic cocktails on MacGregor’s list, including the Old Fashioned Smoke & Spice, which adds cardamom bitters and a chipotle-infused simple syrup. But, after consulting with the staff, I turned to Black Manhattan.
Maybe because it’s October, but the sinister name rings true, conjuring up footage from early ’80s Scorsese movies in a big, dirty, rotten apple.
In truth, the Black Manhattan is closer to a comforting dessert-like nightcap, thanks to a touch of the Sicilian digestif Amaro Averna, which has tones of caramel, chocolate and citrus.
While not strictly on the menu, bar manager Erik Thorsnes adds a dash of black walnut bitters on top of the traditional drops of Angostura when he takes it as a change drink, and I have to admit, after trying both this really opens up the flavor profile.
Of course, it hasn’t been scientifically proven that nuts and candy are meant to be together, but there is a lot of evidence to support this theory. Spread it all on a sip of rye and you’ve got a nice hot fall-worthy drink.
Whether you’re splurging on the top shelf, investigating an Oregon whiskey theft, or sipping on a Black Manhattan, MacGregor’s will serve you something you’ll remember.
